For 1977, the R90S grew in displacement and was seen in two forms, the R100S and RS. The new RS wore several unique styling cues, as well as a modified rear-end ratio that compensated for the full fairing. The RS moniker referred to the German word “Rennsport” (racing), and the model was considered high performance in terms of BMW’s history.
To finalize the new fairing shape, designers conducted extensive wind tunnel testing. The addition of a pair of low bars gave the RS a more racy feel. The engine grew to 980cc, and a larger 40mm Bing carb aided the bigger motor in performing well. The output was 70 horsepower at 7,250 rpm. Top speed remained at 125 mph, even with the slick fairing and gear ratio change.
The R100RS was built for four years longer than its predecessor and had 33,648 total production units. Since then, it has become to be another BMW model highly desired by collectors.
BMW soon offered other variants of the R100, as the platform proved itself to be very versatile in its ability to adapt to different rider’s demands.
We at Omega Racer offer a steadily growing number of custom made parts for the R100, including handcrafted aluminium gas tanks, fairings, seat cowls, full exhaust systems and slip-on mufflers.
